Early life
Jordan Terrell Carter was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in Riverdale, Georgia. He attended North Springs Charter High School in Sandy Springs.[6] Carter skipped high school classes regularly to work on his music or go to his job at H&M.[7]
Carti shopped in thrift stores in his youth, something that has had an effect on his fashion and music style.[8]
Career
Carti began rapping at an early age under the name Sir Cartier. Much of his early work has been deleted from the Internet. He adopted the name Playboi Carti in 2012 and signed to rapper Father's underground label Awful Records.[9] He began to attract attention in 2015 with his singles 'Broke Boi' and 'Fetti' featuring Da$h and Maxo Kream, both of which were published to SoundCloud.[10] Around this time, Carti frequently collaborated with artists in Atlanta's underground rap scene, including his cousin UnoTheActivist, ThouxanbanFauni,[11]Yung Bans, Lil Yachty, Ethereal, and producers Mexikodro, and ICYTWAT.
In 2016, he was featured on the A$AP Mob's single 'Telephone Calls' from their album Cozy Tapes Vol. 1: Friends.[7] The same year, Carti signed to the A$AP Mob's AWGE imprint and Interscope Records.
Carti released his eponymous debut mixtape in April 2017.[12] The release gained attention from various music publications, including XXL,[4]Pitchfork,[13]Spin,[5] HotNewHipHop,[14] and PopMatters,[15] and reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200.[16] The mixtape spawned two successful singles, 'Magnolia,' which reached No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100,[16] and 'Woke Up Like This' featuring Lil Uzi Vert, which reached No. 76.[16] Accompanying the mixtape's release, Carti embarked on a tour with Gucci Mane and Dreezy.[17]
On June 13, 2017, Playboi Carti was named as one of the ten of XXL's '2017 Freshman Class.'[18] Around this time, he was featured on A$AP Mob's single 'Raf' from their album Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy and Lana del Rey's single 'Summer Bummer' from her album Lust For Life.
Most recently, Carti and Lil Uzi Vert have teased a collaborative mixtape.[19]On May 11, 2018, Carti released his debut full-length album Die Lit.
Modeling
Carter's fashion style is one of the main features of his public image. GQ has defined Carter as the 'leader of a youth style,' and said that he represents a stylistic midpoint between the 'fashion gloss of A$AP Mob, the punk-rock attitude of Uzi Vert, and the playful camp of Yachty.'[20]
Carter's favorite brands include Raf Simons and Balmain. Carter met Simons at a fashion show in New York.[21] Carter is featured on the song 'RAF' by A$AP Mob, which was dedicated to the Raf Simons brand. The music video for the song included Carter, A$AP Rocky, and Quavo wearing rare Raf Simons clothing.[22] Carter considers Kanye West and A$AP Rocky inspirations for his fashion style.[23]
Carter has modeled numerous times, including for Louis Vuitton,[24] Kanye West's Yeezy Season 5,[25][26] VFiles,[27][28] and Drake's OVOLookbook, alongside Ian Connor and John Ross.[29]
Musical style
Carter has been described as a 'mumble rapper,'[30] and his music as 'playful, hard-hitting, and very melodic.'[31]Complex called his style of rapping 'spare and repetitive, more concerned with flow and catchy phrases.'[32] Briana Younger at Pitchfork said that 'Carti’s music is less about lyricism and more about atmosphere,' going on to say that 'whatever Carti lacks in substance he makes up in sheer audacity.'[33] Carter's music is influenced by rappers such as Gucci Mane, Young Thug, A$AP Rocky, Lil Uzi Vert, Chief Keef, Yung Lean, and Lil Wayne.[30]
The New York Times said Carti's rapping made it appear as if he was 'more at ease with the performance of the role than with the actual act of rapping.'[34]
Personal life
Carter currently lives and works in and around Los Angeles.[7]
In 2018, Carter began dating rapper Iggy Azalea.[35]
Legal issues
In July 2017, Carter was arrested for domestic abuse charges after arguing with his girlfriend outside of the Los Angeles International Airport and then grabbing her by her backpack and pulling her out of the terminal.[36] In August 2017, it was announced that Carter would not face domestic abuse charges.[37]

The mixtape received generally positive reviews from critics. In a positive review, Jon Caramanica of The New York Times called the project 'erratic, sometimes transfixingly so,' stating that 'Playboi Carti’s album takes hip-hop’s ad-lib era to its logical extreme — everything sounds like an ad-lib, even the main lyrics.'[11] In a more negative review, HipHopDX critic Narshima Chintaluri described the record as 'simply a glorified beat tape with ad-libs', stating Carti 'need[s] to further develop his songwriting in order to maintain this allure alongside his more successful contemporaries.'[9]
Brian Duricy of PopMatters described the record as 'the sonic equivalent of the stereotypical laissez-faire worker who breezes through presentations on sheer personality alone,' stating that 'over the production, however, you’re not getting particularly much.'[10]Pitchfork's Briana Younger wrote that 'Playboi Carti feels like a break from life, the soundtrack to a mindless good time,' and adding that 'Carti is tactful in discerning where and when he can get away with letting the instrumental ride and when he needs to rise to the occasion.'[1] The single 'Magnolia' was awarded Best New Track by Pitchfork.[12]
Accolades[edit]
The mixtape appeared on 2017 year-end album lists by publications such as Fact,[13]Pitchfork,[14] and Tiny Mix Tapes.[15] John Twells of Fact stated that the project 'adeptly taps into a widespread youthful malaise and the genre-fluid playlist culture that has come to dominate rap’s mainstream [...] Sad and restless but also party-ready, Playboi Carti doesn’t need political rambling or conscious posturing to get its message across.'[16] Corrigan B of Tiny Mix Tapes wrote that 'of everything that 2017 promised about rap’s future, Playboi Carti felt the most like a real path forward, a crystallization of the SoundCloud underground’s zeitgeist in a format built to transcend the scene’s messy adolescence.'[15]
